Spatial Distribution of The Appearance of Dugongs (Dugong dugon) As the Basis For The Management of Marine Mammals in Bangka Sentral District

Abstract

The designation of dugongs as marine mammals that are protected nationally and internationally is due to indications of a declining dugong population. Dugong is a marine mammal that is often encountered by fishermen during fishing activities. The marine waters of Bangka Island store various potential natural resources, one of which is dugong. The low emergence of the dugong population requires efforts to protect marine mammals in a sustainable manner. The purpose of this study was to determine the distribution of the location of the emergence of dugongs, the offence of the location of emergence to the catchment area, and management recommendations for the distribution of dugong in Bangka Sentral District. This research was conducted in October – December 2020 in Bangka Sentral District. The method used in this research is using descriptive method. Where data collection is carried out by direct surveys and interviews with fishermen using questionnaires. Determination of the number of respondents using the slovin formula.The research results obtained are the locations that The main reasons for the emergence of dugongs in Central Bangka Regency are the areas around Panjang Island, Semujur Island, Ketawai Island, Bebuar Island, Pasir Island, Gelasa Island, Bonded Island, Gusung Asam, Gusung Perlang, Timor Coral (Perlang), Bugis Coral, Senara Coral, Coral Teal, Ketugar Coral, and Kerpus Coral. The locations where the dugong appears and the fishing catch areas in Bangka Sentral District are in conflict are in the waters of Timor, Gusong and Bugis reefs. Strategies in the form of recommendations that can be carried out are the need to increase the availability of dugong data, educationbased monitoring of the dugong population by involving various parties, and workshops or socialization related to protected animals as a whole
